Quick FACTS on Dragon Dance
Dragon Dance in Chinese: 舞龍 (pronounced: Wu Long)
Origins: Western Han (about 200 BC)
Original Purpose: Dragons are seen as the governors of rainfall. The dragon dance was first
performed as a way of appeasing the "Dragon King" into releasing rain onto the farmers parched land during a drought.

Mythological Make up: various animals
such as the horns of a stag, the claws of an eagle, the jaws of a crocidile, the head of a camel, the ears of a cow, and the
eyes of a rabbit and the scales of a carp
Physical make up: 7 poles supporting
dragons body, which is made with a ratten frame and covered with skin. The skin is made from material and painted
to resemble the dragon’s skin.
Length: 20 metres in length approx
Meaning of Colours:
Green = Great harvest
Yellow = Solemn empire
Red = Excitement
Golden/Silver = Prosperity
The Dragon symbolizes: supernatural
power, wellness, fertility, vigilance and dignity.
The Pearl reprensents: The Sun &
Wisdom, the dragon chases the pearl held by the dancer as it is continually in pursuit of wisdom.
